Agree with your points.

I wouldn't necessarily go after Gavin -- he did something that is still considered politically unacceptable in most of this country. Most people simply cannot see that these juveniles are indeed, victims of their circumstances. Sending them back home without getting the feds. involved seemed like the lesser of two evils.

But of course we have more than two choices, always.

The truth is, these kids are fleeing poverty, child abuse and/or neglect and hopelessness. It is unfair to make them the scapegoats for this mini-scandal or to sacrifice their well-being for Gavin Newsom's political ambitions. Gavin, where are your principles??

Many of these kids' trips to the Bay Area are financed by the larger drug dealers who then expect the kids to pay back by selling drugs. They also make drugs available to the kids, which helps to make them even more beholden to the dealers. These kids are first victims of poverty and child abuse; then they become victims of the real drug dealers who send them out to sell. Now, they are victims of Gavin Newsom, who is not holding true to his principles in San Francisco as a Sanctuary City.

These kids are children, and sending them back deported is sentencing them to incarceration first by the U.S. immigration system and possibly afterwards by the Honduran system, which is very harsh. Gavin Newsom should be ashamed of himself. There is no lobby to defend the Honduran kids who come here and to help publicize their situation(s), such as exists in Florida among the Cuban community. I also fault the SF Chronicle for describing these kids as "dealers" when the real dealers appear to go free (hint: many of the them are in Oakland).
