Kidnapped

Thanks to my immigration saga, my Mom is extremely sick. Her days seem numbered. She may not even survive my first cancellation of removal merits hearing if this goes on any longer.

Maybe we need to go back to the drawing board and re-evaluate my decision to fight for a green card in court. At the same time, I know I am right – this is my right. I just don’t want to lose my mother over it.

I may need to quit school for a while and get a full-time job. I’d rather pack my bags and leave this place, but that would almost certainly kill her. I am pretty much all she has and all she lives for.

Reporter:: So have you ever left the United States since you were brought here?
Me:: No, leaving would most likely trigger a 10-year ban from the country and I would not be able to qualify for the petitions filed by my grandparent, parents or my sister. I have to live here — undocumented — if I don’t want to be separated from my home or family. And “wait in line” all over again.
Reporter:: OH MY GOD, that is like being kidnapped!
Me:: Yes, it is. It is exactly like being kidnapped.

I’m taking her out to the movies tonight. We haven’t done that since I came back. It’s not my fault — she would rather not sit through Transformers, Cars 2, Green Lantern, Super 8 and the other action movies. So we will watch Midnight in Paris.

I’ve noticed over time that the white women in my life seem to be put off by my “momma’s girl” attitude. That’s completely fine with me. This is why I need a “desi girl” or at least someone with some sort of traditional family values.

Who says you cannot live while being kidnapped?
