‘The Tan Klan’ Bandaid Badge

// June 1st, 2009 // No Comments » // Immigration, Racism

Anti-immigration forces call groups like the National Council of La Raza ‘The Tan Klan’ and the latest insinuation is that judicial nominee Sotomayor is also a part of the Klan.

What is the Tan Klan? The so-called Latino Klan without the hoods and nooses.

Of course, one would never find members of La Raza and ‘the Tan Klan’ lynching and violently attacking persons who are deemed different. The label not only insults and trivializes the horrific history of black Americans who suffered at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan, but also unjustly purports that contemporary brown people somehow have the same power of persecution without consequences.

http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/2158/tanklan.png

I decided to make a badge in support of ‘the Tan Klan.’ A friend remarked that it looks quite like a bandaid, and we both agree that Comprehensive Immigration Reform is a bandaid solution. The anti-immigration forces do not have solutions. The solutions offered by the Tan Klan are not long-term.

Real immigration reform involves battling how neo-liberal globalization drives migrants from poorer countries to richer countries, how the state constructs the labels and categories of legal and illegal. No one in the DC establishment is willing to do that.

This may be a DREAM come true

// December 3rd, 2008 // No Comments » // Immigration

I am a bit ill this week and trying to relax before exams so this is a short note -

The DREAM Act has taken off as the #1 idea on Change.org and the many students coming out with their stories is absolutely heart-warming as well as heart-breaking. It might be tough to repeat this in the second round (Jan 5 – 15) but we must try to come out in the Top 10 and maintain a link with the supporters of critical immigration reform online. That’s why I urge all supporting members of Change.org to add DreamACTivist as a friend to get more updates and alerts on upcoming actions as well as join the Immigration cause.

Another idea that is very close to my heart (and personally tugs at my heartstrings more than the DREAM Act) is Uniting American Families Act. It has been placed in the Immigration section so the LGBT community might not be too aware of this. We tend to maintain a bridge between immigration and LGBT issues too often but issues like these show the heteronormativity of immigration laws affect more than just one core community.

Don’t forget your book donations to the Fiji Children’s Trust. Fiji might be the epitome of paradise in the eyes of many tourists, but the people living there have another story to tell. The Indians that have migrated from the country due to the coups have their own tales of sorrow and grief but that does not mean we should forget those that are left behind, especially the children. They played no part in the overthrow of the Indian-dominated labor government or the subsequent persecution of Indians; hence, they should not be punished for the ignorance of Fijian nationalists and nativists.

Of course, the government is realizing that the loss of Indo-Fijians has drastically harmed the economy and trying to lure back former Fiji citizens:

The interim government has announced former Fiji citizens living abroad will be entitled to automatic residency status at a cost of 1,860 US dollars from next year, giving them the right to reside, work and invest in the country.

It’s also setting up a foreign currency accounts scheme to make it easier for them to send money to Fiji.

Wait, so we migrate from Fiji after nativist calls to “go back home to India” and the overthrow of two democratically-elected Indian-dominated governments, but the Fijian government wants us to now PAY for residency after forced migration?! That is such an insult! Of course I say that while still maintaining my own Fijian citizenship …

I’ll be back after this weekend with loads of posts.

Study: Immigration Skeptics Not Necessarily Xenophobic

// November 17th, 2008 // No Comments » // Desi-Indian, Immigration

Several interesting claims in a new European study:

“Given how central the immigration issue has been for the new radical right-wing parties in Western Europe, many have turned to immigration-related factors in trying to explain their emergence and electoral mobilisation. This research has convincingly shown that immigration scepticism (i.e., wanting to reduce immigration) is among the principal factors for predicting who will vote for a radical right-wing party,” investigators in Stockholm, Sweden report.

Can this be used for some comparative analysis? Are the immigration skeptics in the U.S. more likely to look for Third Party candidates on the ‘right’ or vote for a staunch nativist Republican (Tom Tancredo)? I think we do know how disgruntled the nativists were with the two primary choices in these past elections.

“However, earlier studies have often uncritically equated immigration scepticism with xenophobia or even racism. By using data from the first round of the European Social Survey (2003) involving six West European countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands and Norway), this article differentiates between immigration scepticism and xenophobic attitudes. The analyses strongly indicate that xenophobic attitudes are a far less significant factor than immigration scepticism for predicting who will vote for the new radical right. Moreover, this article analyses the extent to which anti-immigration frames employed by radical right-wing parties resonate with attitudes held by supporting voters, and to what extent they make a difference for people’s decision to vote for the radical right. The analyses indicate that frames linking immigration to criminality and social unrest are particularly effective for mobilising voter support for the radical right.

Help me out here. How is immigration skepticism not tied to xenophobia? Any type of ideology that calls for stricter border controls or place limits on immigration feeds into the political construct of borders, and hence reinforces the ‘foreignness’ of the Other across borders.

To the nativists, please do find and list more future pro-migrant sites for everyone to see, as well as other great propaganda you come across.

As usual, the nativist rambling has no substance, some usual capitalization of the phrase ‘ILLEGAL ALIEN’ and loads of spelling and grammatical errors.

On the same blog, I saw this sign:

What? Hypocritical much? Maybe they got the signs the wrong way i.e. ‘End Tolerance. Begin Bigotry?’ It would better suit their anti-immigrant sentiments.

Here are some helpful resources for the nativists since they were so kind to give us some links to allies:

Day 3 – Breaking the Fast

// October 17th, 2008 // No Comments » // Immigration, Racism

This morning I woke up completely weak and feeling faint. I suppose going to the gym and continuing to work is not a brilliant idea while fasting. Unfortunately, I have to break my fast tonight since I cannot afford to miss another tennis class (already missed 3 due to exams)!

As a result of this experience, I have renewed admiration for political leaders and activists that have used fasting as a means to achieve their goals.

So we had some nativist hate spam. Check this one out:

Fast til you die. Who cares. Not sure what your not eating really proves. So you don’t eat. Then what. The rest of us are supposed to take notice of you and your “cause” because you stupidly chose not to put food in your mouth? fail to see what this proves of resolves. Are your really helping anything or anyone by not eating? Let me answer…NO. Find a REAL solution…….help people that actually respect and abide by the laws of the land!

Performative contradiction anyone? I might also suggest spell check…

I want to see the Minutemen and other nativists fasting for their cause but my wish may go unfulfilled in this lifetime. So what is their REAL solution? Rounding up 12 million undocumented immigrants, putting them in detention centers and deporting them? Yes, I wonder how the economy will handle that net loss of productivity and spending. On this note, Richard Delgado, a law professor at Seattle University, has stated that the recent ICE raids and crackdowns have contributed to the soaring costs of basic food items. It may be a case of correlation does not equal causation error but does merit further investigation.

I hope more people–bloggers, activists, students–can fast at least a day to show their solidarity and support with the Encampment in Los Angeles.

Here are some videos from the actual camp:

Another Failed Nativist Sequel – Illegal Aliens Caused Financial Collapse!

// September 26th, 2008 // 2 Comments » // Immigration

The nativist hate-o-sphere is at it again. After blaming legal immigrants for causing global warming, now illegal immigrants are facing the brunts of their latest accusation. What is it? Why, don’t you know, those migrant workers, low-income wage-earners, illegals in the military, undocumented students struggling to afford college, caused the financial collapse of Wall Street, Main Street and are responsible for the foreclosures. Now we need a $700 billion dollar bailout for them! See what Quaker at DreamActivist has to say about this.

(Psssst, while the nation is conveniently distracted, lets also give DHS $4billion for overbudgeting on old technology)

Tancredo ran in the Republican presidential primaries on a platform devoted strongly against illegal immigrants (a noun, verb and ‘illegal alien’). He garned less than 1% of the vote but that has not stopped him from obsessing over those illegals and running around to ‘catch them.’ We cannot blame him though; forget ‘illegal aliens’, ethnic diversity is a sight for sore-eyes in his state so of course he is longing for rarity.

So, despite the fact that the last movie flopped, illegal aliens are responsible for the mortgage crisis, booms nativist Tom Tancredo, in a new theatrical sequel. Viewer discretion is advised. Strongly advised.

If these 38 million illegal aliens are in fact, attaining mortgages on housing property, that means they are buying houses (creating demand) and paying property taxes on them in the thousands annually. Wait, that cannot be right, ILLEGALS don’t pay taxes, they just reap all the benefits that belong to American citizens!! Which one is it Tancredo, ALIPAC, and the nativist blogosphere? Are you screaming double-bind with little room to wiggle? Did not think the erroneous claims all the way, did you?

Alleged anchor baby, Michelle Malkin is adamant that it is no coincidence that foreclosures have hit hardest in cities that are ‘illegal alien sanctuaries’ such as “Loudon County, Virginia, California’s Inland Empire, Stockton, San Joaquin Valley, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.” Even if we were to accept that these cities are largely hit due to illegal immigrant presence, we would still be making the mistake of assuming causation when there is in fact, only correlation.

The correlation is explained by the fact that the housing bubble created massive jobs for illegal immigrants in construction, who settled in those areas. Fueled by the boom, the INDUSTRY over-built using the old adage, ‘if you build it, they will come.’ The Census held that immigrants, legal or otherwise, are good for the housing market — they created demand and bought houses that otherwise may remain on the market, creating losses for builders. When the market started to unravel in 2006, the bubble burst as is a tendency inherent in the capitalist system, and thousands of undocumented immigrants in construction work found themselves unemployed with no ‘cushion paychecks’ and unable to afford mortgage rates. Now, do we blame companies and industries for overproducing or do we blame workers for simply doing the jobs they were given? The answer is simple.

For the more seasoned reader – Even if you believe that illegal aliens are to blame for some, even a tiny bit, of the mortgage crisis because lets admit it, we do have lenders who help straw buyers access loans, do consider that attrition through enforcement has created a self-fufilling prophecy. The idea of attrition through enforcement is to make life so tough for illegal immigrants that they would self-deport. Counties like Prince William and states like Arizona, Oklahoma, Rhode Island (flowing with illegal Canadians),  pride themselves for driving out ‘illegal aliens’ by getting tough on them. Lets deploy ICE in various cities, and round-up the working mothers of undocumented families in the thousands. It makes for great entertainment for the nativists, but the TRPs don’t translate into any sort of economic or social gain.

Guess what is left behind? Well, yes, the children have the huge mortgages on their hands now. But eventually, empty houses, bank losses upon ‘bailouts’ and no one to buy the homes in foreclosure since the overwhelming number of consumers do not have the capital to invest at this time. Well, congratulations to nativists and nativist policy-makers — if you are blaming illegal aliens for the ‘mortgage crisis’ three more fingers are pointing back at you.

Without immigrants, legal or illegal, we have even less demand for housing, and hence a falling rate of profit for the real estate bubble. BURST! If you want ‘illegal immigrants’ gone, be prepared to pay the price of huge losses to the economy. Don’t turn around and blame immigrants, legal or illegal, for the mess that they just may have cushioned or softened.

Documentary ‘Border’ – Masquerading as Neither ‘Left’ nor ‘Right’

// September 15th, 2008 // No Comments » // Anti-Capitalism, Immigration, Nationalism, Racism

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y170/elijahfell/l_8b013776dc5c20a4d3f0d37a356fc451.jpg

From the Press Release (propaganda) of this new pro-restrictionist, pro-Minutemen ‘Documentary’ called ‘Border’:

The shocking documentary ‘Border’ shows how a porous border and limited enforcement enables human smugglers and drug traffickers to extort, rape, murder and humiliate those seeking a better life in the United States.

Destroying the notion that those who want to secure the border are racist xenophobic bigots, filmmaker Chris Burgard shows how the predominantly Hispanic property owners and law enforcement personnel on US side of the border are fighting a war against drug cartels that move people and drugs across the unforgiving and desolate desert terrain.

Contrary to the talking points of the so-called ‘immigrants rights’ groups, Burgard shows how illegal immigrants are sometimes locked into indentured servitude to the smugglers who’ve delivered them to safe houses in cities like Tucson and Phoenix. The smugglers, commonly known as ‘Coyotes,’ threaten to kill the families of the newly arrived immigrants if they don’t pay extortion money. Sometimes, this servitude can go on for years.

The claims made in this press release are ludicrous. Pro-immigrant rights group online such as The Sanctuary have never supported the smuggling of ‘illegal immigrants’ and indentured servitude. We even have huge reservations about guest-worker programs that could potentially create a separate class of laborers more prone to exploitation.

Furthermore, the documentary deceptively tries to claim that since immigrants trying to come into the United States through porous borders have to undergo extraordinary dangers, border enforcement works in favor of these immigrants?! What? First, try telling that to the families of migrant workers that are shot by the U.S. border patrol. Second, if the borders were indeed so ‘porous,’ wouldn’t coming over be child’s play? And third, do you seriously expect us to believe that the Minutemen are patrolling the border to protect ‘illegal immigrants’ and stop drug cartels? The fact that the documentary symphatizes with the Minutemen should be enough to stray clear of it.

The biggest fallacy of the documentary is the assumption that border enforcement is somehow the solution to ‘illegal immigration’ and all the dangers surrounding it. However, if immigration from Mexico and Latin American countries was easier, if people did not need to wait in line for 20 years to reunite with family, if the category for unskilled work visas was not riddled with bureaucracy, if migrant workers could migrate easily across borders, they would not be desperate enough to hire coyotes, risk exploitation and harm crossing over the desert terrain or Rio Grande.

If, in Latin America, the United States did not support the disproportionate elite & multinational corporation ownership of lands primarily used for agriculture that consequently prevented people from sustaining themselves, if it did not ruin economies and livelihoods by waging a war against narcotics while simultaneously selling those narcotics to arm reactionary movements, if this country worked to make labor as free and mobile as capital, a large number of migrants would have no reason to flee ‘North’ in order to survive and make a living.

The border, and enforcement of walls erected to keep out the unknown–whether it is done in protection of or from the unknown–still constructs and reifies differences, still otherizes. The documentary is simply more nativist propaganda masquerading as impartial ‘truth.’

ALIPAC stands for “Anti Latino Immigration”

// June 7th, 2008 // 2 Comments » // Immigration

Note: There is more where this comes from. Originally posted at ADreamDeferred.org by DreamActivist. img405/7188/antispanishbi5.jpg

William Gheen, the President of ALIPAC.us (not to be mistaken for ALIPAC.net) claims that his site is not a hate group and not anti-immigrant; they are in fact, pro-legal immigration and anti-(illegal)-immigration, and 1 out of 5 members belong to a minority ethnic group. He was incredibly upset by a Charlotte Observer article a few days ago that called him an immigrant-scapegoating bigot, after highlighting his rhetoric:

We have a destructive human tsunami headed our way,” said William Gheen of Americans for Legal Immigration, a political action committee based in Raleigh that pushes anti-immigrant legislation. “N.C. lawmakers must act now to protect American jobs, tax resources and lives. Our state must … batten down the hatches immediately.”

I decided to give him and ALIPAC.us the benefit of doubt and check out their discussion forum to see their discourse and what kind of actions they advocate against “illegal immigration.” The following is what I uncovered in a couple hours:

DreamActivist :: ALIPAC stands for “Anti Latino Immigrants”
1. William Gheen stating that placing a bounty on the heads of “illegal aliens” is a humorous idea. Pintobean – “…So, put a bounty on the head of every single illegal alien in this nation, and let the red necks and their shotguns go to work…you can bet in a year this place would be DEVOID of illegal aliens, and the price tag WELL WORTH IT. “Humorous idea Pinto, but I don’t think the American public would be happy with a bounty driven illegal alien hunt. Besides, US citizens do not have the ability to determine legal status…W” See here 2. After defending himself against the Charlotte Observer article and proclaiming he is not a racist, Gheen adamantly stated in reference to a post about an upper-class Mexican-American community (most of whom are legal):

THEY ARE NOT IMMIGRATING! THEY ARE COLONIZING! – W

See here. It seems as if even legal immigration is colonization for Gheen and his ALIPACers if that migration is from Mexico (and other Latin countries). 3. William Gheen purported that due to expanding ethnic minority groups, the White race was facing extinction, a popular statement among neo-Nazi groups. See here. FYI – Hitler used this as one of his arguments against the Jews and it is a sentiment shared widely by neo-Nazi groups today such as StormFront, AryanUnity.org, Aryan-Nations.org Oh, it gets worse. We go from fear-mongering over the extinction of white people to hating ethnic celebrations like Cinco de Mayo. What does this have to be with being against “illegal immigration?” 4. Expressing hatred against ethnic minority celebrations like Cinco de Mayo. See here.

Koobster – “I dont celebrate Chinco, di, mayonais” AmericanPatriot – “I don’t even know what or when Cinco Demayo is and I don’t want to know.” AE – In our house we call it “Stinko-de-mayo”. mdillion1172: “…these “new immigrants” want to celebrate everyday…in fact we seem to celbrate all kinds of minorities all the time…. no wonder the white middle class is faced with eventual extinction”

Uh-oh, we were right back to the extinction of white people due to a day of ethnic celebrations. The ignorance, cultural insensitivity and intolerance was shocking. Time to get out of here. 5. ALIPACers advocating segregated schools for children who speak Spanish and disparaging Latino leadership. I quickly took one last look through the forum for latest posts. It turns out that today (as in June 7), the ALIPACers were very upset about this news article “Services Sought for Growing Latino population.” Again, the news has no connection with “illegal immigration” or breaking the “rule of law” and yet, these were the comments who can see here:

Since Hipanics think they are TOO SPECIAL TO ASSIMILATE, let them build their own Spanish schools. – butterbean

Since they don’t want to assimilate here, they should just go home. – Usa-born

I say we go back to segregation…separate the non-English speaking foreigners from the American schools…and let them fund and support their own schools! – AmericanbornThis is what makes me madder than a wet hen!!! Who gives a rat’s behind about LATINO LEADERSHIP!!! American leadership is, or should be, the only thing that counts in AMERICA! … Go back to Mexico or Central America if you want to be LATINO LEADERS! God know they NEED leadership!!! Just get the (bleep) out of my country…all of you…LaRaza, LULAC, MALDEF, MeCHa, and all 48 Mexican Consulates! – AmericanMe

They have issues with the teaching of Spanish in schools and some even purport returning to an era of school segregation. The discourse reflected on this page is not just anti-‘illegal’-immigration, it is directed against Latinos, bi-lingualism, diversity, and multi-culturalism.

With a preponderance of evidence gathered in just a few hours, it was crystal clear to me that ALIPAC is a hate-group ranging from subtle and disguised discourses of anti-Latino racism to outright neo-Nazi statements from their members and even the founder. Do you need more evidence?
