Till We Meet Again | A Bette-Tina Beginning Chapter 14

Bette grimaced at the loud sounds of firework as the clock struck midnight.

She heard her cellphone ringing. Obviously, someone, probably her sister, was calling her to wish her a ‘happy new year.’

“No, don’t even say it! What is the point of celebrating a NEW year when we have the same old? Illiterate Bushie is still President, sharp-shooter Cheney is still running the country, the economy is in shambles, people are dying in Iraq, children dying of poverty and lack of clean water, the state of our education system is UNSTATELY, and my fucking knee still hurts!”

“Why, hello and a happy new year to you too Bette,” Tina replied sarcastically.

“Oh hi T…” Bette mumbled, instantly sedated by Tina’s voice.

“Whatchya doing on New Year’s Porter? Drinking cold nasty American beer and talking to the television set?”

“Something like that. Alice went out to one of her socialite diva parties. She should be home soon though…” Bette frowned. “Where is Eric? Does he know yet that you are cheating on him with me?”

“Dream on Porter. He is actually outside having beer with some friends.”

“And you are sneaking indoors talking to me on your phone? Why don’t you join him in the celebrations and be a part of human civilization?” Bette grunted.

“Please, you should be the last person talking about being a part of human civilization. You would rather stay home, get drunk on cheap beer and watch tv instead of hitting it up with glamorous and beautiful women. What’s wrong with you? Nevermind…I should ask what is right with you. Then, the answer wouldn’t take all night long.”

Bette rolled her eyes. “T…I think I am rubbing off on you.”

“Don’t worry. I am taking meds for it.”

“I didn’t know I was special enough to require meds. What are you taking?” Bette asked, feigning excitement.

“Pain-killers for migraine headaches. We do need to get you a prescription for verbal diarrhea though.”

“Damnit! I walked right into that trap, didn’t I?”

“No, but you limped in record time.”

“Uh-oh, low blow T…low blow,” Bette said laughing. Tina was the only one she would let get away with that one.

“T…?”

“Yeah?”

“There is something I need to tell you.”

“Well, don’t make me hold my breathe. It is precious.”

“I … I am in love with you…” Bette blurted out.

She CANNOT be serious, Tina thought to herself. “Shutup Porter.”

[silence on the phone]

“Bette, are you still there?”

“You told me to shut up.” Bette mumbled incoherently.

“Uff…whatever. Got any New Year’s resolutions besides annoy T and make everyone around you miserable?”

“Those are year-round resolutions T.”

Tina rolled her eyes. “Yeah, forget I asked.”

“Do you have any New Year’s resolutions T?”

“Work on my marriage…” Tina replied seriously.

“Why not something harder, like losing 10 pounds, bringing me down on my knees or my head between your legs?”

“Those are also your year-round resolutions Bette, in some alternate fantasy universe.”

“Ha! Okay. Lets both work on our marriages and compare results at the end of the year.”

“That is the only sane thing you have said today.”

“Yeah, take post-it notes and sticky-notes and type up a complete report, footnotes and all…”

“Nevermind…” Tina sighed rolling her eyes in frustration… “I am getting a migraine attack again,” she teased. “Anyway, I must head to bed Bette.”

“Yeah, it is way past your bedtime,” Bette joked. “Goodnight T”

“Whatever. Goodnight Bette. And a HAPPY NEW YEAR once again!” Tina hung up, laughing to herself as Bette sat flicking through various news channels scowling.

After a while, she picked up her cell phone, typed a message and sent it to Tina. It read: “Thanks. You were the first.”

Tina read the text as she lay in bed and smiled to herself. She quickly typed and sent a text back to Bette saying, “So were you.”

There’s not much we can do about the reasons why some men and women would rather leave their country than live in it. The fact is beyond our reach. Who appointed us, then? No one. And that is precisely what constitutes our right — Michel Foucault
